Malgorzata’s internship with Signify
Cześć! My name is Malgorzata Guzel and I started my career in Signify as a Lighting Application Specialist (LiAS) intern.
I wanted to grow my talent with a well-known company and that is why I applied at Signify; at the time Philips Lighting. The application process went very smoothly and within a week after applying I had an interview with my future manager, Radek. To be honest, it felt more like drinking coffee with a friend and talking about the possibilities of light.
My first day was amazing. With some other interns and starters, I had a tour through the office, received my papers, took the health & safety training, joined a presentation about my department, and was introduced to my coach and working environment. It felt very complete and made me completely comfortable from day one.
The first assignment I received in the LiAS department was re-designing the light plan of the office where I worked, using DIALUX software.
This was a good starting point as I was sitting with the group of the actual designers and could ask them questions about the choices they made. The next assignment was the interior lighting for the Libero shopping mall in Katowice, together with my coach. He taught me all the basics and insights for a successful project.
After that, new assignments were put on my plate, first in the segment ‘shopping mall’, and later also from other segments. I felt like a professional worker in the team; with my coach there to support me when needed, and at the same time where my insights as a fresh student were really appreciated. On the job I learned to negotiate and work with the deadlines we had with the interior designers and construction companies.
Looking back, I see the internship at LiAS as the biggest step in my career so far; I learned so much. It felt like opening Christmas gifts one by one, in a group of very proud, friendly and diverse lighting designers.
